As I said above soul gems are used for enchanting weapons and armor. To do this you will need access to the arcane university. You will also need a full soul gem. To fill a soul gem you must cast soul trap on a creature. Then before the spell runs out you must kill the creature. Upon doing so you will trap its soul in the soul gem. Viola, you have a filled soul gem ready for enchanting.

Where to Find Soul Gems

Soul gems can be found in various locations. You can find them in caves and in ruins. However the two places with the most are mage guild halls and magic stores. To get the soul gems in the mage guild halls first join the mages guild, then when you take the soul gems it won't be considered stealing.

Types of Soul Gems

The are 5 types of soul gems, petty, lesser, common, greater, and grand. The more powerful the soul gem the more powerful the monster you can capture, thus increasing the amount of charge for your enchanted weapon. Azura's Star

Azura's star is a refillable soul gem at the grand level. It makes gathering soul gems obsolete. So if you are planning on enchanting lots of weapons and amor do the Azura's shrine quest. You can also get the sword Umbrage which has the enchantment soul trap for 60 seconds on it to make a nice team of items.

Soul Trap

Soul trap spells can be bought from various mage guild members. So again if you plan on using soul gems join the mages guild to make your life a lot easier. Soul trap spells can be bought at a lot of different levels. So there could be soul trap for 10 seconds, 20, 30, 40, etc.
