The xbox is now one of the leading consoles in the console wars, however it was not always like this. When microsoft invented its xbox it was left in the dust by Sony's PS2. It was released November 15, 2001 in the United States. With the xbox 360 being released November 22, 2005. The
xbox history is one of huge odds. However with top games like Halo the Xbox started to fight back. Now the Xbox 360 is ahead of Sony's PS3. In this article I will give a brief xbox history on how the xbox became one of the top consoles.
Microsoft decided the invent a gaming console when Sony had huge success with their Playstation. Microsoft thought that the consumer would rather buy a gaming console than a computer, so they decided to start building a console. The
Xbox history begins when Bill Gates stated at the end of a 1999 press conference that they would start to develope a new gaming console.
The Xbox was to create history when it was the first gaming console to have a built in hardrive, The playstation had to save data on memory cards. Another part of xbox history is that it had one of the largest controller ever made. However the xbox 360 solved this problem by making the controller much smaller. Around 2002 and 2003 is when the xbox history changes, big name games like
Halo and Tom Clancy start to come out, then the release of
xbox live helped the xbox greatly. Within two and a half years of xbox live's launch the number of memberships was at 2 million. You can now see that the xbox has many followers and there are even
magazines for xbox gamers!
Withing a few years of the xbox's launch the xbox history went sour when people started to figure out how to
mod the xbox. Mods allow people to play burned copies of xbox games. However even this could not stop xbox, then when xbox 360 was released before sony's ps3 and the xbox had great first year games coming out like Gears of War and Oblivion, then later the release of
fable 2 helped the xbox 360 gain superiority. Sony was now playing catch up with Microsoft. Now to this day (December 12 2008) the xbox 360 has outsold the PS3, good work Microsoft!
